Program Description
This study-abroad program allows students to experience China, the second largest economy in the world. Through a short term study in Shanghai, a renowned international metropolis, students will participate in a summer language and culture program at the International School of Tongji University. The university experience will offer Chinese language classes, insight into Chinese culture; modern, traditional, urban, suburban and rural life. In addition, all students will travel to Beijing, China, for the Great Wall, National Palace Museum, and the Summer Palace, and the city of Xian, a treasure house of cultural relics where Qin Shi Huang’s tomb resides, guarded by terra cotta warriors. The tour also includes the city of Luo Yang, the Cradle of Buddhism and the location of the Shaolin Temple, which is renowned for its Shaolin martial arts that are so popular in China and the rest of the world. We will travel around Shanghai, China’s financial center and most progressive city, to experience this modern marvel of architecture, convenient public transportation and kinetic urban energy and the city that hosted the recent world expo. We will also travel to other Chinese cities such as Nanjing, known as the Capital City of Ten Dynasties in China’s history, and the beautiful SuZhou and HangZhou, the Venice of the Orient. You will experience and discover the Yellow River region, the cradle of Chinese civilization.

7/27 Classes complete at Tongji, start tour to Nanjing, Xian, LuoYang, and then to Beijing
8/7 Fly back to the States
8/8 TESC classes start. Meet intensively every Saturday from 9am to 1pm for weekly check in, language practice, film viewing, and seminars, or as arranged. Video and/or Photo journals created by everyone for the documentation of the trip.
8/29-9/2 Evaluation week, final presentation of documentary (video and/or photo) journals.

In 上海Shanghai:

In 南京Nanjing:
Visit中山陵 (Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’ Mausoleum)、长江大桥 (Bridge of Yantzi River)、大屠杀纪念馆 (Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall)、玄武湖 (Xuanwu Lake)等
In 杭州HangZhou、乌镇Water town Wu village (or Wuzhen):
Visit 灵隐寺Linyin Temple、飞来峰 Feilai Peak、岳王庙 General Yue Fei Temple、游西湖 West Lake、六和塔 Six harmonious Pagoda、乌镇 Water town Wu village 等
In 苏州 Suzhou、周庄 Watertown Zhou Zhuang:
Visit虎丘 Tiger Hill、留园 Liu Garden、寒山寺 Hansan Temple、周庄 Watertown Zhou Zhuang等
We will also travel to 北京Beijing, for the Great Wall, National Palace Museum, and the Tienanmen Square, 西安Xian, where the great archeological excavation of Qin (221BC-206BC) Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses unearthed a strong army of altogether 7,000 life-size pottery soldiers, horses, chariots and weapons arranged in battle formations, guarding the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. We will visit the International Horticultural Expo while there. We will also travel to Shaolin Temple, or Shaolin Monastery in Henan Province, founded in the 5th century, which is long famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu.
Program Cost:
Tuition and supplies @ Tongji: $462.03
Room and Board @ Tongji: $321.24
(Single Room @ Tongji please add extra: $174.64, add extra: $355 for single supplement during travel. Total $529.64 for overall single supplement.)
Travel in China (incl. Hotel stays and transfer): $1300.00
Airfares in China: $332.40
(Do not include tips to travel guide and driver.)
Total: $2415.67 (or $2945.31 for single supplement in school dorm and hotel stay during travel) & TESC tuition for 8 or 12 credits.
International Airfare: from USA to Shanghai, China: $1200 and up. Faculty can provide travel agency contacts for discounted international airfare. Please contact the faculty immediately for the best rate.
