Week 5 Calendar page available

You can find the Week 5 Calendar page using the link above.

  • While there is no new reading assignment for Week 5, you are still expected to complete a Reflection (see post below for prompts) by 6 pm Sunday.
  • The Quiz on Week 4 material begins promptly Monday at 8:30 am in Lecture Hall 4.
  • Monday’s Lecture/Seminar (Sem 2 A2105, 10:15 am or 1 pm) will be like Wednesday Workshop, and you will work in groups to produce Solutions for Posting. Solutions are due to be Posted by 11:59 pm on Monday.
  • Monday’s Physics Lab (Lab 1 2046, 10 am or 1 pm) will be a regular lab, so bring your lab notebook and be prepared for lab.
  • Tuesday begins promptly at 8:30 am in the CAL. Math Lab 5 will have you explore some of the open ended questions you’re encountered before (review your notes) as well as some new investigations.
  • Wednesday’s EXAM begins promptly at 9 am in Sem 2 A2105. See post above for more info.

Week 4 Reflection online form available

You can find the Reading Response and Reflection 4 form here. The prompts (taken from the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice) handed out in Thursday’s Wrap were:

  • Model with mathematics. Students work to improve their ability to apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in multiple contexts. They become more confident making assumptions and approximations to simplify a complicated situation, realizing that these may need revision later. They are able to identify important quantities in a practical situation and map their relationships using such tools as diagrams, tables, graphs, and formulas. They can analyze those relationships mathematically to draw conclusions. They routinely interpret their mathematical results in the context of the situation and reflect on whether the results make sense, possibly improving the model if it has not served its purpose.
  • Look for and make use of structure/express regularity in repeated reasoning. Students work to improve their ability to look closely to discern a pattern or structure in natural phenomena or mathematical relationships. As they work to solve a problem, students maintain oversight of the process, while attending to the details. They continually evaluate the reasonableness of their intermediate results. They notice if reasoning and calculations are repeated, and look both for general methods and for shortcuts. They can step back for an overview and to shift perspective. They can see complicated things as single objects or as being composed of several objects.

Quiz 3 Revision info

  • Use the Quiz 3 Revision Version for this revision (you can also find a link at the Week 4 Calendar page). Print out and complete your answers on the Revision Version itself. Each question on the Revision Version is modified from the original quiz question. They are basically the same, but the numbers (or equivalent) have been changed.
  • The expectations for the quality of Quiz Revision solutions are substantially higher than for the original quiz. You should re-do each part of every question you are revising.
  • You should come to the Revision Discussion with the Quiz Revision already completed and in hand. Bring your original Quiz with you as well.
  • This week’s Quiz Revision Discussion will occur Tuesday in the CAL. Given the wait time in the last Quiz Revision Discussion, we will likely take individual students for the Quiz Revision Discussion during Math Lab 5, and continue into the noon hour as needed.

Week 4 Calendar page available

  • The Week 4 Calendar page is available.
  • You can find Reading Guides for the Week 4 physics and pre-calculus readings at the Week 4 Calendar Page.
  • Reading Response and Reflection 3 on-line form now available and linked at the calendar page. The Save Draft feature is still enabled; you need to be logged in to the blog for this to work (like for Solution Postings and Reviews).
  • The essay prompts for the Reflection are below. The prompts are taken from the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice and the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. Please remember to save your essay responses to your own file. Provide specific details or examples indicating how you have made progress towards meeting the learning goals described below. If you think you haven’t made satisfactory process towards meeting these goals please make sure to check in with your faculty.
    • Attend to precision (#5). Students work to improve their ability to communicate precisely to others. They try to use clear definitions in discussion with others and in their own reasoning. They state the meaning of the symbols they choose, including using the equal sign consistently and appropriately. They are careful about specifying units of measure, and labeling axes to clarify the correspondence with quantities in a problem. They calculate accurately and efficiently and express numerical answers with a degree of precision appropriate for the problem context. They give carefully formulated explanations to each other.
    • Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information (#9). Students work to improve their ability to communicate clearly and persuasively the ideas and methods they use and generate, both individually and in groups. They communicate information and ideas in multiple ways, including using tables, diagrams, graphs, models, and equations as well as orally, in writing, and through extended discussions. They employ multiple sources of information (including experiences, observations, and texts) that they use to understand, formulate, and evaluate the merit and validity of claims, methods, designs, and solutions.
  • Please read below for important announcements you may have missed.

WAMAP technical issues, Thu. Apr. 17 **updated**

  • (Thu. Apr. 17 1:00 pm)  WAMAP is having technical issues and has gone off-line temporarily. Since this is a WAMAP side problem, we’ll have to wait for them to take care of it. But if it lasts much longer, we’ll just extend the pre-calculus assignment due date once we are able to access WAMAP again.
  • **(Thu. Apr. 17 3:30 pm) WAMAP is back up. Here’s the incident notice https://www.wamap.org/securitynotice.php; please re-set your password as directed and make sure to note the updated password. We’ll extend the due date to 1:00 pm Sun. Apr. 20 to compensate for this off-line period.**
