WEEK 8 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Winter quarter is drawing to a close (can you believe it?!), and we're starting to think about the spring. Check the links to the right to find drafts of our spring class schedule, reading list, and syllabus. Here are a few items to note:
- Our theme in the spring is "Improvements to Self, Community, and Society," and the program is organized around each of these elements. We intend for this quarter to be the capstone of your Evergreen education; it will be a powerful and empowering experience.
- Students will register for 16 credits with "Self and Community." The program is structured around a 12-credit core curriculum for all students. In addition, you can choose to continue your current internship in the same organization for 4 credits or to engage in a 4-credit social justice research and teaching project. Students who wish to continue their internship should draft the required internship paperwork (including a meeting with Advising) before spring quarter begins. You will review your completed contract with Toska or Heesoon on the first day of class (Monday, March 31st at 9 a.m.), and obtain the final signatures afterwards.
Attached below is an announcement for a web seminar on "Secondary Trauma and How to Reconcile its Impact." The seminar is from 11:00-12:30 on Thursday, March 13th. The attachment gives more information about the topic and how to register.
WEEK 7 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Schedule change for Craig: I will be off-campus on Friday February 29th, but I will be on campus on Friday the 22nd from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, and on Monday the 25th from 1:30-5:00 PM. Send me an e-mail if you would like an appointment to discuss your program. Thanks!
A partial spring quarter reading list is now available under "Readings, Spring 2008."

WEEK 6 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Folks have asked for some clarity about due dates. Please submit your learning-in-progress emails to your faculty sponsor by Friday at 5 p.m. on week 6 (Feb. 15), week 8 (Feb. 29), and week 10 (Mar. 14). Please submit your forum post and peer responses by Friday at 5 p.m. on week 7 (Feb. 22) and week 9 (Mar. 7). Your final service learning process paper is due week 10, Tuesday March 11 at noon. Craig has placed a number of documents on the Handouts page that may be of use to you based on the comments made on the Forum page. Let us know if you want more of these types of resources.
WEEK 5 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Congratulations on reaching the middle of the quarter! We're looking forward to seeing you this Tuesday, Feb. 5th from 11-3 in Sem. 2 C 1107 for our program potluck and other fun and educational activities. Please check your email for a survey that will help you prepare for Craig's problem-solving workshop. We're also looking forward to reading your first service learning process papers, which are due Tuesday at 11 (in person or via email). Please let your faculty know if you don't receive a midquarter evaluation/fifth-week feedback form via email sometime this week.
Our program is sponsoring a fantastic event this week, and you're invited! Jennifer Finney Boylan, bestselling author of She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders, will be on campus this week reading from her new book I'm Looking Through You: Growing Up Haunted. Please attend the free reading on Wednesday, Feb. 6th at noon in Seminar 2, B 3107. This is a great opportunity to learn about self and identity from a well-known transgendered author. See the announcement attached below.
Here are some thoughts from Craig on social justice in historical perspective:
It was exactly 75 years ago that Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, and created what is arguably the most oppressive, genocidal government in modern history. In terms of sheer numbers impacted, Stalin's Soviet Union is certainly in competition for this distinction. In my parent's generation, no one was left unaffected by the events that followed Hitler's rise to power. Today's issue of the New York Times offers several articles on this topic, and the one I thought you all might be interested in is entitled, "To Resist Hitler and Survive." This article recounts how Germany deals with its legacy, and how some of the oppressed chose to respond. It also, I believe, speaks to the notion that there are different types and degrees of oppression, and that a "strategic" response sometimes works best. You can find the article at https://gate1.evergreen.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/03/opinion/03neiman.html?_r=1%26ref=opinion%26oref=slogin.
WEEK 4 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Please contact Craig if you're planning on attending class next week. He'd like to mail you some materials in preparation for his problem-solving seminar.

WEEK 3 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Attached below is a letter we sent to everyone via email, including a description of the fabulous activities we'll do during our first class meeting. Please let us know if you didn't receive the email; this means that we don't have your current email address.
WEEK 2 ANNOUNCEMENTS
Thanks to everyone who participated in our first week's forum. I love how you're supporting each other!
Craig and I are looking forward to your first learning-in-progress emails next week. Please email us sometime before the end of the work day on Friday.
It's important for everyone in the program to subscribe to our "self and community" group, since we're doing so much work together on-line this quarter. If you can't access the forums, this means you're either not logged in or you haven't subscribed to our group. Contact Toska immediately if you need to subscribe; that way you can participate in our forum discussions.
Please email, mail, or bring a copy of your final contract (including all signatures, your email address & phone, and your field supervisor's email address & phone) to your faculty sponsor. It is essential that we have your and your supervisor's current contact information as soon as possible.
CORE COMMUNICATION text info
If you're interested in purchasing Miller and Miller's book Core Communication: Skills and Processes this quarter, here's how to do it:
- Check out the website comskills.com to decide whether you want to purchase only the workbook listed above or the entire "core pac," which includes other materials. If you want to order the core pac ($33), you can do so by following the links on that web page.
- If you only want to order the workbook ($22), call Interpersonal Communication Programs, Inc. toll free at 800 328 5099. They'll ask for your instructor's name (you can mention Toska or Heesoon).
- If you want to wait until Spring quarter to buy the book , it'll be available for you to purchase at the Evergreen bookstore.
FIRST WEEK ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Welcome back, everyone! We hope you all had a lovely winter break. Vacations are wonderful, but there's learning afoot! So get out there and start those internships and volunteer jobs.
Some week 1 business items: CONTRACTS, FORUMS, and OFFICE HOURS
- Please send or bring a copy of your final contract (including all signatures, your email address & phone, and your field supervisor's email address & phone) to your faculty sponsor this week. It is essential that we have your and your supervisor's current contact information as soon as possible. You will also take copies of your contract to Advising, but you shouldn't need to take them to Registration.
- The first forum topic is now listed. You should post your responses to the forum questions and also interact with your peers by responding to their posts. Please don't just post your responses and leave; one way of keeping our community alive is to interact widely and actively with your peers and to help them process their experiences in the field. To that end, please read everyone's posts and respond to at least 5 (but hopefully more). We recommend posting your comments early in the week and then returning once or twice during the week to respond to what others have written. All of our posts should be limited to the faculty and self and community groups to ensure that our program is the only audience for these conversations. (By the way, if you can think of a better way of organizing this forum thing, let us know.)
- Toska will be in her office (Sem 2, E 4108) from 10-12 on Monday, and Craig will be in his office (Lab 1, 3006) from 10-3 on Friday. Drop by and chat!
