NSF Workshop on Canopy Structure Data - Before You Attend

Before You Attend

We request that you carry out three tasks before the workshop.

By March 10, 2002, we ask you to send us your data set (if you have not already) and a brief (1-2 page) description of your project and data. These will be compiled and circulated prior to the workshop so that we can learn about each other's data in the most efficient manner. Please send the data to Bram Svoboda, who will then make the "outline" (what's the "outline"?) of the data set and some sample data for it available on the web site. Note that (unless you have specified otherwise) the web site will be protected so that only members of the workshop will be able to see your sample data.

By April 16 (about two weeks prior to the workshop), we request that you look over the abstracts and peruse the various field databases. These will be sent to you on CD ROM, and will also be available in the Big Canopy Database web site. We would like you to compare your own data with those of other workshop participants. For example, if you have a set of data that concerns within-branch structure of Douglas-fir trees, you might propose expanding your own research to approach this at a stand level by using data collected by another collaborator who has data at stand- or landscape-level spatial scales. Please briefly describe (one page or less) your "Mix 'N Match" approach, and email it to svobodaa@evergreen.edu. We will post these ideas on the workshop web site http://acdrupal.evergreen.edu/canopy/workshops/home by April 20, so you can read them before you come. As a launch pad for the Workshop, we will ask that each participant informally present his or her data combination idea(s) to the group during our first day. These presentations and ideas will serve as the core for discussions of what is lacking and new directions to pursue.

Finally, before you come to the workshop, please review the "Big Canopy Database" website http://canopy.evergreen.edu/bcd/, including the Emerald database generator http://acdrupal.evergreen.edu/canopy/research/databank/. We will spend time at the workshop doing usability sessions, and it would be helpful if you have already looked the sites over and have comments.
