This course is designed to help people understand the influence of economics on public policy. The class will develop an understanding of economic analysis with an emphasis on macro- and microeconomics. In addition, this class focuses on the public policy implications that result from an understanding of basic economics. Students will be expected to regularly gather pertinent articles for class discussion. In addition, students will be expected to work in small groups and regularly make presentations that clarify fundamental economic concepts. This class serves as a prerequisite for graduate school, including Evergreen's MPA and MES programs.

Students will learn to interpret assessments of students with disabilities and write legal, effective Individualized Education Plans including appropriate goals and objectives. Participants will look at all stages of the IEP process, learn to avoid crucial errors and to refer to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) 2004 language detailing IEP requirements. The class will study differences between effective and problematic IEPs and how an incomplete IEP could mean denial of FAPE (Free, Appropriate, Public Education).

Through lectures, readings, videos, workshops and field trips we will investigate the study of mind that has developed within the Buddhist tradition. In doing so, we will take special care to avoid the common pitfall of most Western interpretations of Buddhism - the attempt to fit Buddhist ideas and practices into unexamined Western assumptions and traditional intellectual categories. All students will attend class June 22 - July 22. Students enrolling for 12 credits will also participate in a four-day retreat July 24-27 that will focus on meditation and other forms of Buddhist practice as pathways toward mental and spiritual well-being. No previous knowledge of Buddhism or psychotherapy is required.

Theory meets practice in this nuts-and-bolts class. Students explore each aspect of an arts agency as they systematically plan their own arts agency from vision to mission statement to concrete. Topics examined include business plans, funding sources, human resource concerns and legal issues.
