"Robert Wilson Riding Hood"
Treatment
At the end
of a long, dark, and dismal corridor the figure of an Old Little Red
Riding Hood can be seen emerging from a bright light. As she slowly
walks down the corridor the sounds of machines can be dimly heard
and every time we see her in this place she is younger and more innocent.
The next image is the Wolf, a seemingly well-spoken and good-natured
gentleman, beginning to tell part of a story in a plain but elegant
room. The images belonging to that story appear in the form of a child
Little Red Riding Hood strolling through the woods where she confronts
the wolf, more bestial he is in the study. The story goes back and
forth between the corridor, the study, and the forest, getting progressively
darker and more frightening with the return to each. The Little Red
Riding Hood in the forest is pursued into a visually and aurally mechanical
setting where she is eventually caught.
Cast
list
OLD LITTLE
RED RIDING HOOD (LRRH):
She
is a frail older woman. Her hair is long and gray and she walks
with stuttering steps. She wears red.
MIDDLE-AGED
LRRH:
She
is a middle-aged woman. She walks with the comfort of a woman
who has seen her number of years. She wears red, too.
YOUNG LRRH:
She
is still bright with the youth of a child but the uncertainty
of youth still pervades her. She is less confident, but still
a hopeful youth. Again, she wears red.
CHILD LRRH:
She
is a joyful innocent youth with pigtails and a skip in her step.
However, she is more wary and fearful than her predecessors and
is easily frightened. She is the epitome of the prey. Of course,
she wears red.
THE WOLF:
The
wolf is at first sophisticated. He speaks with an English accent
or at least is very careful about his pronunciation. As he progresses
though, his elegant surface disappears and his true bestial nature
comes to dominance. During the dream sequences the Wolf is more
bestial. Hair covers his body, his ears come to a point, and his
teeth are long and sharp.
He is
a monster, a bogyman, a bump in the night. He is the predator.
Screenplay
INT. CORRIDOR-NIGHT
The corridor
is long and there are many doors. There are a few lights but they
flicker and do not penetrate the gloom of the hallway. At the end
of hall there is a bright white light that Old LRRH is slowly hobbling
down.
INT. STUDY-NIGHT
The study
is bare, wooden floors and walls. It is elegant but Spartan. The Wolf
is sitting in a plush armchair wearing a smoking jacket and smoking
a cigarette with long filter. Next to the chair sits a nightstand
with a cup of steaming tea on it. He speaks with an air of cultivation
and a little whimsy.
WOLF
So
I said that it was her perfect right to take a package, which
is what I understood she was carrying, to the home of an old relative,
but that I, too, had the right to have some fun. After all, a
person has the right to have some fun.
INT. CORRIDOR-
CONTINUOUS
Middle-aged
LRRH has taken the place of the other and she is halfway down the
corridor closer.
EXT. FOREST-DAY
Child LRRH
is strolling happily down a forest path. She is carrying a basket
with a heart on its lid so that when it opens the image of the heart
separates into two halves. The forest is bright, and the branches
sway in there is a slight breeze. The scene is completely silent.
The Wolfs voice penetrates the scene partway through.
WOLF (VO)
I
said that it was her perfect right to take a package, which is
what I understood she was carrying, to the home of an old relative,
but that I, too, had the right to have some fun. After all, a
person has the right to have some fun.
The Wolfs
speech repeats throughout the rest of the piece.
INT. STUDY-CONTINUOUS
The Wolf
continues his speech, but there is a slight agitation creeping into
his voice.
EXT. DARK
FOREST- CONTINUOUS
The forest
has grown bigger; the trees are older and more ominous. Child LRRH
is walking more cautiously as she is in a more unknown place. Meanwhile
the voice of the Wolf is repeating.
INT. CORRIDOR-
CONTINUOUS
Young LRRH
is now walking. She is still closer than her predecessor. The voice
of the Wolf still repeats.
INT. STUDY
The wolf
is serious about his monologue now and is saying it with more conviction.
He stops talking breathing heavily and takes a sip of his tea.
EXT. DARK
FOREST- DUSK
Child LRRH
is now walking in slight fear and there are unheard noises all around
her. Suddenly, the figure of the Wolf appears ahead of her. He is
a silhouette, barely recognizable as even human. LRRH stops cold in
her tracks.
INT. CORRIDOR-
CONTINUOUS
Child LRRH
is now standing in the hall, very, close to the end with a look of
fear in her eyes. She is paused, waiting.
INT. STUDY-
CONTINUOUS
The Wolf
is quite agitated now and he stops his speech. He then takes a long
drag off his cigarette and exhales. He smiles maniacally.
EXT. DARK
FOREST- DUSK
She waits
a moment then turns and bolts and Wolfs speech starts again
this time with a metallic grind to his voice. She runs as fast as
she can in the opposite direction. The Wolfs figure chases her
through the murky wicked forest.
INT. CORRIDOR-
CONTINUOUS
Child LRRH
is running away, down the corridor.
EXT. INDUSTRIAL
PARK- CONTINUOUS
The chase
continues, in which the Wolf is revealed as an almost human pursuer
and the Wolf grabs her hand and the distorted speech stops. He howls
in triumph.
INT. STUDY-
CONTINUOUS
The Wolf
is violently pouring out his speech; he tears his clothes and froths
at the mouth, crazed. He tosses the nightstand over and his blood
red tea pours onto the floor.
EXT. INDUSTRIAL
PARK- CONTINUOUS
LRRH hits
him with the basket. While he is stunned she gets up and climbs a
ladder.
EXT. ROOFTOP-
CONTINUOUS
The moon
and stars are out and a peace settles over our LRRH. She strolls across
the roof, with a carefree ease. After a moment she chooses another
ladder to climb down.
EXT. ALLEY-
CONTINUOUS
LRRH climbs
down the ladder and hops onto the solid asphalt ground.
WOLF (VO)
After
all, a person has the right to have some fun.
She turns
around to see the wolf directly in front of her, a ravenous look of
hunger and desire on his face. Screeching, grinding, abrasive noises
accent the wolfs springing attack. The basket flies out of LRRHs
hands during the assault, violently smashing onto the ground. She
falls helplessly to the ground in a pool of oily water.
INT. CORRIDOR-
CONTINUOUS
Child LRRH
stands at the far end of the corridor. She takes a single step into
the light and disappears.
Continuity
script
The
sound in this piece is at first quiet, but as it progresses it becomes
more abrasive. Unless otherwise noted there should be a continued
degradation of noise. It is all the sounds of machines at work or
the sound of metal in various states of tearing.
CORRIDOR
1. ELS:
Old LRRH is at the end of the corridor and she starts to walk towards
the camera. The sound of a train whistling and starting to move is
heard in the background almost inaudibly.
2. MS: of the wolf
in his study. The sounds of clocks can be heard benignly ticking
in the background.
WOLF: So I said that
it was her perfect right to take a package, which is what I understood
she was carrying, to the home of an old relative, but that I,
too, had the right to have some fun. After all, a person has the
right to have some fun.
CORRIDOR
3. ELS: Middle-aged
LRRH is halfway to the camera and still walking. The train
whistle is closer still.
SPARSE
FOREST
4. MS: the camera
has a side view of Child LRRH is walking carrying her basket down
a forest path. There should be the murmuring whir of electricity,
fans, and rotors. Like that of a windup music box.
5. CU: on her smiling
face.
6. CU: on her basket
with its heart lid.
7. CU: on her skipping
feet.
8. MS: of her coming
towards the camera until she fills the frame.
WOLF (VO): I said that
it was her perfect right to take a package, which is what I understood
she was carrying, to the home of an old relative, but that I, too,
had the right to have some fun.
9. CU: on her back
as she walks away from the camera.
WOLF (VO): After all,
a person has the right to have some fun. (This speech continues
on throughout until otherwise noted.)
STUDY
10. cut to dominant
MS of Wolf as he continues his speech. The ticking is now grinding
thumps.
DARK FOREST
11. the camera is
above and angled down looking at the girl as she walks though the
dark forest.
12. CU: of her face.
CORRIDOR
13. ELS: of Young
LRRH and she is about 3/4 of the to the cameras position and
still moving towards us.
STUDY
14. CU: the wolfs
upper body, noticeably more agitated than before. He stops speaking
for a moment.
15. CU: the teacup
sitting on the nightstand by the wolf. The wolfs hand reaches
into the frame and removes the cup from the frame.
16. MS: the
wolf sips his tea, trying to calm himself.
DARK FOREST
17. the camera is
directly above the girl as she walks.
18. Wolf POV: he is
looking directly at the girl who stops in her tracks. There is a moments
pause as the camera shakes with the wolfs breath.
CORRIDOR
19. ELS: Child LRRH
is now directly in front of the camera, paused and waiting. The train
is dying down as if going through a tunnel.
STUDY
20. LS: the camera
has a full view of the Wolf. He takes a long drag off his cigarette.
The clock is ticking low and bass filled.
21. CU: of his mouth,
his fingers shaking, he smiles, and exhales.
DARK FOREST
22. Wolf POV: The
camera pauses then lunges towards the girl, who bursts into a run
away from the wolf.
23. the wolfs
speech starts amid a clamor of grinding machinelike noise, but his
voice is distorted and unclear. 24. the following sequence
should be a montage of quick cuts accenting the action from different
angles of the pursuer and the pursued. There should be many CUs
of limbs in motion and shots of the tree line. The cameras motion
should be jerky and vague.
CORRIDOR
25. ELS: Child LRRH
is running down the corridor away from the camera. The camera rolls
into a Dutch angle. The train sounds are distorted and savage
.
INDUSTRIAL
PARK
26. The montage continues
for a second showing the spires of the Industrial Park and their feet
along the cemented and puddle covered ground.
27. The camera is
angled up from the ground and LRRH runs over it, as does her pursuer.
For the first time we see the towers of the park clearly.
28. Wolf POV:
LRRH looks back at the camera as it pursues her.
29. CU: of her hand
as it is grabbed by the Wolf.
30. CU: a dominant
view of the wolfs profile is seen. His eyes glow red and he
lifts his head and howls audibly, yet metallically distorted.
STUDY
31. the wolf is becoming
far more beastly. His voice is distorted beyond recognition. He stands,
tearing his clothes apart, and kicks over the nightstand.
32. CU: in slow motion
the cup falls onto the floor and breaks apart and the blood-red liquid
splashes onto the white porcelain shards.
INDUSTRIAL
PARK
33. CU: of his profile
again as he starts to lowers his face.
34. CU: of LRRHs
arm as she begins to swing her basket.
35. Wolfs POV:
The basket swings towards the camera, the heart lid filling the screen.
36. a loud crash is
heard and the screen blacks and clamor of noise dies away.
37. the camera is
behind the wolf so that his legs straddle the frame and LRRH stands
in the background. The Wolf topples backwards so that he lands profiled
right at the bottom of the frame while LRRH stands triumphantly over
him.
38. the camera is
below LRRH as she reaches above her and grabs hold of a ladder and
begins to climb upwards.
ROOFTOP
39. CU: the ledge
of the roof and LRRHs hand grabs the side of the ledge.
40. MS: she pulls
herself up over the ledge and onto the roof.
41. the camera is
directly above her and she looks up smiling into the heavens.
42. MS: the skyline
frames LRRH as she balances across the ledge of the building.
43. MS: she looks
over the edge of a building.
44. Downward angle
into an empty alley where the ladder is in the lower portion of the
screen. LRRH grabs a hold of it begins to climb back down.
ALLEY
45. MS: the camera
tracks down the ladder with LRRH as she climbs down. The Wolfs
head suddenly is revealed below.

all, a person has the right to have some fun.
STUDY
46. MS: of the Wolf
lying in a fetal position in his study, helpless to the end of the
story.
ALLEY
47. CU: we see half
of LRRHs face as she stops and the figure of the crouched Wolf
in the background, growling.
48. The camera is
angled towards the ground where LRRHs feet centered. The Wolfs
feet thunder past pushing LRRHs feet out of the frame where
her basket is dropped and crushed. The sound of metal twisting and
breaking is heard. The heart on the crushed basket is the focus of
the frame. The camera pans slowly to the left where a puddle is revealed
and LRRHs limp hand splashes. There is the sound of the beast
leaving.
CORRIDOR
49. ELS: at the end
of hallway Child LRRH stands directly in front of the light for moment
before she steps into it and is swallowed by the now much brighter
light.
