The learning goals for this assignment are for you to explore another animation format, exercise drawn animation skills, work with transforming or adapting a cyclical image sequence into a linear structure, and to continue experimenting with ways to represent physics concepts visually. Drawing Track students have two additional goals: to develop an intentional palette that uses color compositionally and/or expressively and to include at least 8 frames of a human figure in motion.
Parameters:
- The sequence must include a repeated cycle. This will provide some rhythmic structure. You may adapt the cycle from an existing zoetrope strip or strobotop disk, or create a new one in either of those formats.
- Storyboard your ideas for the sequence in your sketchbook.
- The sequence must have some reference to a physics concept that we’ve been working with. This could be a test for an idea you have for the final project, or a different way of approaching a concept you’ve already represented in animation.
- The flipbook must have a minimum of 36 leaves with images. For this minimum number, you will need to “sandwich” the image sequence with blank cards so there is no slack on the screw post. You will need 50-60 total cards to fill the post. It’s advisable not to make a book longer than 70 leaves.
- Linear structure means that there is a beginning, middle and end to the sequence so consider how you introduce the content, ease in to the first actions, position the “climax” or most interesting actions, and resolve or ease out of the actions.
- Use the index cards and bindery screws provided.
- Design and include a cover with a title, your name and the year.

Due dates:
By your workshop next week (week 7) complete the penciled in actions of your flipbook so that it’s ready for coloring. We will have a peer work in progress session on these and set you up for the bindery work.
Bring the completed flipbook to the Wrap on Thursday, 2/21, with your strobotop disks and strobotop strobe light to contribute to a final animation toy mash-up and celebration.
