This class explores the similarities and differences between mindfulness-based therapy and Western cognitive therapy. Applying East-West counseling and psychological approaches, students will gain practical skills to help alleviate the psychological suffering of others while maintaining emotional balance and professional ethics. Students will have opportunities for personal practice, observational learning and the development of counseling skills through role-playing, reading and discussion.

Headlines depict today’s youth as increasingly violent - from participation in gangs to dramatic schoolyard shootings. This course aims to study laws, regulations, policies and procedures in the juvenile justice arena. We will explore the history of and current trends in juvenile crime, justice, sentencing and incarceration. Social and economic influences will be examined, as will alternative programs. Future directions in juvenile justice will conclude our work.

This is an introductory journalism class with the community as its focus. What will be the future environmental, economic and cultural health of our community? Who holds the power to decide? How can ordinary citizens have a say? This course will allow students to explore these and related questions as they learn how to find and interview local newsmakers and decision-makers, conduct journalistic research and begin to write clearly about complex subjects. Students will write news stories, feature stories and one longer magazine style enterprise piece.

Students will review and discuss historical events and assess their associated ethical dilemmas. The lenses used will include organizational theory, communication skills and diversity. Students will then be asked to identify a current ethical dilemma and apply what they have learned. This course will end with students developing a set of general guidelines for their personal use as a reference when confronted with future ethical questions as managers.

Every year Evergreen programs bring outstanding guest speakers to campus to meet and work with students. This course is designed to coordinate these visits, creating a weekly lecture series featuring nationally recognized artists as well as Evergreen faculty whose work explores the intersection of art and politics. “Evergreen Presents” complements other full- and part-time offerings in Expressive Arts and Culture, Text and Language. The Evergreen Singers is a continuing choral ensemble of Evergreen community. No auditions are required. We learn the basics of good voice production and sing from a range of musical idioms. In winter, we will learn American shape-note singing and participate in two events off campus. Members of the Evergreen Singers need to be able to carry a tune, learn their parts and sing with their sections. This class requires excellent attendance.
