This course covers applied research methods. We will blend theoretical readings with the design, implementation and evaluation of a real-world research project. Students will shape the whole endeavor from designing survey instruments to the analysis of the data. The analysis will be carried out using statistical software, specifically SPSS, allowing students to see how statistical analysis works, without requiring detailed mathematical skills. The research will also require some qualitative research. Readings will be based entirely on articles covering methodology theory, data display and the application of research findings to public policy.

How are we to make sense of our lives and our world? We usually depend on common-sense presuppositions to understand our experience. But sometimes we feel the need to reflect on and question those presuppositions. In this course students will develop their abilities to reflect carefully on these questions through close reading of several philosophers in the Western tradition, through intensive writing about the topics of these philosophers, and through dialogue in seminar.
